Zero commitment

Tutor as much or as little as you want.

No minimum hours, no contract term, no quota. You tell us when you're free and change it whenever you like. A term with one student is just as welcome as a term with eight.

How pay works

A share of every session that grows as you teach.

Families pay $55–70 an hour for diagnostic teaching, not someone to sit beside the homework, so we pay for it. Your rung sets your share of what the family paid for each session, from 55% up to 80%, never less than $30 a session, and you see the dollar amount before you accept.

Where you start depends on your background. Associate (undergraduates, or under 2 years of tutoring) starts on Rung 1 and moves up every 10 sessions, reaching Rung 4 at session 31. Senior (a bachelor's degree and 2+ years of teaching or TA experience) starts on Rung 2 and reaches Rung 4 at session 21. Lead (OCT, B.Ed or MT, a master's, or 5+ years) starts on Rung 3 and reaches Rung 4 at session 21.

At pay-as-you-go prices ($55 and $70), per 60-minute session, rounded to the dollar. Families who buy packages pay less per session, and your share is of what they paid: on a 20-session package the same rungs pay $30–37 for Grades 9–10 and $32–46 for Grades 11–12. No session ever pays you less than $30.

What counts toward your next rung

    Explain, model, and have the student practise.

    Within 24 hours: what was covered, where the gaps are, and the plan for next time.

  3. +1Verified session

    Every 10 of these moves you up a rung, until you reach Rung 4.

Late or thin note? You're still paid in full. That session just doesn't count toward your next rung.

One grace pass per 10 sessions. One note in each block of ten can be up to 72 hours late and still count.

  • Paid once a month by e-transfer, for every session you taught that month.
  • Never under $30. Whatever package the family bought, a session pays you at least $30.
  • No surprises. You see what a session pays, and what the family pays, before you accept it.
  • Small groups of 3–4 students pay your 1-on-1 rate plus $5 for each student. Four Grade 11 students at Rung 4: $56 + $20 = $76 an hour.
  • Breaks cost you nothing. Your rung stays where it is, however long you're away.

  2. A call and a short mock lesson

    15–30 minutes · video

    We talk about your background, then you teach us a topic you choose while one of us plays the student. Ask us anything about pay and matching while you're there.

    What we're watching for

    • Finding out what the student already knows before explaining.
    • Working out why an answer is wrong, not just correcting it.
    • A second explanation ready when the first doesn't land.

    What we're not judging

    • Nerves. Everyone has them.
    • Finishing the topic. Ten clear minutes beats covering it all.
    • Knowing everything. "Let's work it out" is a good answer.

  3. A decision, with the reason

    Yes or no

    Either way you get the actual reason. If the gap is fixable, we'll tell you what to work on and you're welcome back.

    You can start with online students straight away. In-person sessions need a current vulnerable sector check first, and we reimburse the fee after your first 10 sessions.

Fair questions

What tutors ask us

Do I need to be a certified teacher?

No. Your background decides which rung you start on, not whether you can join. Certified teachers, teacher candidates and experienced tutors all go through the same call and mock lesson.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

No. Set your availability and change it whenever you like. Tutoring more depends on families needing your courses, and we'll be straight with you about what that looks like.

Can I turn down a student?

Yes, any match, for any reason, including none. Declining a match never counts against you.

What happens if I take a break?

Tell us ahead and we'll cover your students while you're away, then hand them back. Your rung stays where it is, however long the break.

How fast can I move up?

Every 10 verified sessions moves you up one rung until you reach Rung 4. With three students a week, that's roughly one rung a month.

What if my session note is late?

You're paid in full either way. A session counts toward your next rung when its note is in within 24 hours and covers what was taught, the gaps, and the next step. One note in every 10 can be up to 72 hours late and still count.

What if a family buys a package?

Your share stays the same, and it applies to what the family actually paid. Packages cost families less per session, so they pay you a little less: on a 20-session package, about 16–17% less than pay-as-you-go. You always see the exact amount before you accept.

What about free referral sessions?

Tutors are paid in full for free referral sessions. The free session comes out of our share, never yours, so you're paid your usual rate as if the family had paid full price.

Do I get anything for bringing in a family?

Yes. Tutors count as referrers too. If you bring in a family, you and the student each get a $25 gift card once they've paid for 5 sessions.

How do small groups pay?

Your 1-on-1 rate for that course, plus $5 for each student in the group. If the group bought a package, the 1-on-1 part follows that package, just as it would for one student. At Rung 4, four Grade 11 students pay you $56 + $20 = $76 an hour, against $56 for one student. Groups run with 3 or 4 students in the same course.

How and when do I get paid?

Once a month, by e-transfer, for every session you taught that month. You see what a session pays, and what the family pays for it, before you accept.

Are sessions online or in person?

Online by default. If you're open to meeting in person, at a library or similar public place, tell us and we'll factor it into matching.

Do I need a vulnerable sector check?

Not to apply, and not to start online. You need a current check from your local police service before you meet any student in person. It commonly takes a few weeks in Ontario, so many tutors start online while it processes. We reimburse the fee after your first 10 sessions, so keep the receipt.

Am I an employee or a contractor?

An independent contractor, which is why you set your own hours and can turn down any match. We don't withhold tax, so keep track of your income. We can't give tax advice, but we're happy to point you somewhere.

What if a family cancels last minute?

Families give 24 hours' notice. If they cancel inside that window they're still charged, and you're still paid for the time you held.

Can I keep tutoring a family privately?

Not for six months after your last session together through us. Finding and matching that family is the work we do, and that period protects it. Families you meet some other way are entirely your own.

How many students should I expect?

It varies, and we won't promise a number we can't back. Tutors with clear availability in courses families are asking for get matched fastest. Right now that's physics, chemistry, French, business, Data Management and computer science.
